Therapy for LGBTQ+ and Neurodivergent Adults – Structured Overview

A More Structured Overview of Therapy

Some people prefer a clear, direct explanation of how therapy works before getting started.

This page sets things out in practical terms. It may be particularly helpful if you are neurodivergent, or if you prefer things to be explicit and predictable.

You do not need a diagnosis for this to be relevant.

What Therapy Is

  • A 50-minute session
  • Usually once a week
  • A space to talk, think, or reflect
  • Led by what you bring, rather than a fixed programme

There is no requirement to:

  • prepare in advance
  • explain things in a particular way
  • “do therapy correctly”

What Happens in a Session

You can:

  • Talk about whatever feels most relevant
  • Take time before responding
  • Change topic if something feels too much
  • Sit in silence if that is what you need

I may:

  • Ask questions to help clarify what is happening
  • Reflect patterns I notice
  • Check things with you rather than making assumptions

We can adjust how we work as we go.

Structure and Flexibility

If you prefer more structure, we can:

  • Start with a clear focus for each session
  • Return to specific themes
  • Work in a more step-by-step way

If you prefer less structure, we can:

  • Follow what emerges in the moment
  • Stay with an experience without needing to define it
  • Allow the session to develop more freely

You can change your preference at any time.

Communication

You do not need to:

  • Maintain eye contact
  • Use precise emotional language
  • Respond immediately

You can:

  • Ask for more direct questions
  • Ask for more time
  • Say if something does not make sense

We can find a way of communicating that works for you.

Starting Therapy

Initial Consultation (15 minutes, free)

A short call where you can:

  • Ask questions
  • Get a sense of how I work
  • Decide whether to book a session

There is no obligation to continue.

First Session

In the first session:

  • We explore what has brought you
  • You can share as much or as little as you want
  • We begin to think about what you might need

You do not need to explain everything straight away.

Ongoing Sessions

We will agree:

  • Frequency (usually weekly)
  • Whether the work is time-limited or open-ended

We will review how things are going as we continue.

What Therapy Can Help With

Therapy may support you to:

  • Understand patterns in thoughts, emotions, and relationships
  • Respond differently to situations that feel overwhelming
  • Make sense of past experiences and their impact
  • Develop a clearer sense of what matters to you

This is usually a gradual process rather than a quick change.

Neurodivergent Considerations

If you are neurodivergent (including ADHD), we can take this into account.

For example:

  • Working with differences in attention and focus
  • Allowing space for shutdown, overwhelm, or difficulty finding words
  • Making expectations explicit rather than assumed

If you are unsure what helps, we can work that out together.

Practical Details

  • Session length: 50 minutes
  • Fee: £45
  • In person: Swansea (Tuesday mornings), Carmarthen (Wednesdays)
  • Online: Mondays and Thursdays

Deciding Whether This Is Right for You

This approach may suit you if you are looking for:

  • A collaborative, reflective process
  • Flexibility in how sessions are structured
  • A pace that feels manageable

If you are unsure, the consultation is a straightforward place to find out.
